Summersquash sprout showing its first true leaf. Mar 24.
The Saffron Straightneck Yellow Summer Squash from burbee is listed as an early producer. With compact high yielding plants this was an attractive variety to add to our compact garden. Best results when thinned to 3 feet apart. There was several failed attempts to direct sow these as we had several weeks of cold rain. I ended up getting healthy sprouts by starting indoors and leaving outside when possible. This removed any hardening period. The single sprout that finally grew was started May 10th and was carefully transplanted on May 19th.
